KALØ SLOTSRUIN VISITOR ACCESS

MAP Architects has inaugurated the design to the entrance, access and viewing tower inside Denmark’s oldest medieval surviving site, Kalø Slotsruin, for The Danish Ministry of the Environment, with support of Realdania. The ruin is one of Denmark’s best maintained medieval castles and a part of the Realdania ”Stedet Tæller” and ”Steder i Landskabet”, located on the south of Djursland, close to Århus.

The new tower acces and viewing platform allows the visitor to acces the inside of the ruin for the first time, offering a close up the historical layers of the construction and, capitalising on the existing eroded openings, presents views of the fascinating surrounding landscape.

The stair is supported in four points, and given the delicate nature of the tower, it was through 3d scanned to design the stairs with the extreme low tolerances which the historic ruin allowed.
